about
Havið sang ("The sea has sung") is a musical setting of a poem written by Faroese poet Hans Andrias Djurhuus (1883-1951). The words depict the relationship between the Faroese people and the waters that surround it – as a source of both sorrow and joy, of dangers and heroic journeys, motivating as many drinking songs as funeral psalms. It tells of a sea that sings to its people, and this is one attempt at picturing what such a song could sound like.
lyrics
Havið sang um Føroyar í túsund, túsund ár –
brúðarsong og líksálm, sang um gleðibros og tár.
Ljóðið barst um skorarnar og fleyg um tindar hátt.
Havið sang um Føroyar ta longu heystarnátt.
Havið sang um Føroyar sítt eyma mjúka lag –
bivandi og higstrandi – og kvirr vit hoyrdu tað,
sótu still á sandinum og vistu neyvan av,
At vit bóru ástartrá til Føroya fría hav.
Havið sang um Føroyar, og havið syngur enn,
brýtur inn um skerstokk millum vásaklæddar menn.
Fýkur fon um tindarnar og hvirlast hvítt um drang;
syngur hav um Føroyar, sum havið altíð sang.
Syng nú, hav um Føroyar, syng fagran song í kvøld,
syng um stríð og váðaferð og tak so tíni gjøld.
Fostraðir av brotinum og berginum í senn
líta vit í ódnina, vit havsins royndu menn.
Hoyrt vit hava havsins dun frá fyrstu vøggustund;
og til tess vit berast út í deyðans langa blund,
lýða vit á íðubrot og sjóvarfalsins drátt;
eiga vit í barminum tí havsins megnarmátt.
